The purpose of this qualitative, descriptive study was to explore how Division II athletes described inspirational episodes from a Division II coach and how these episodes influenced athletic performance at a public university in the Southwest United States. The identified theoretical foundation relating to inspiration for this study included the two-component process of inspiration (2CPI). The 2CPI describes the transmission of inspiration episodes though being inspired by and being inspired to. The research questions guiding this study included: How did DII athletes describe the process of being inspired by through inspirational episodes from a coach? And, how did DII athletes describe the process of being inspired to through inspirational episodes from a coach to influence athletic performance? The sample included Division II track and field and basketball athletes from a public university. This study utilized a qualitative methodology and a descriptive design to gain insights into athletes' inspirational episodes transpiring from a coach. Data collection included a guided interview and a focus group to identify inspiration themes. Data analysis included thematic analysis to extract themes to describe the inspiration phenomenon. Important findings of this study demonstrate that coaching behaviors influence how inspirational episodes transpire and lead to increased athlete motivation. The results of the study show that a coach provides a framework for inspiration, enhances the inspiration process, and inspires an athlete to greater performances. Recommendations for future research on how coaching behaviors can utilize inspiration to meet the needs of athletes are presented.
