Understanding gender as an experience existing independent of one's biological sex has grown in Western cultural acceptance over the past decade. However, the traditional Judeo-Christian interpretation of God's intended gender structure is binary (male and female) as evidenced by a person's biological sex. The fall of humankind may account for variations in gender identity; however, it is unclear whether gender incongruence is the result of developmental or physiological abnormalities. While there is emerging research on the experience and expression of gender, few studies have centered on the intersection of experiences for individuals who identify both as a Christian and a gender minority. Both subcultures represent a wide variety of experiences and beliefs that, at times, are in tension with one another. Christians, in general, hold traditional views of gender roles and how they are defined, while gender minorities typically push against those traditional roles by nature of their personal experience. This study sought to understand the experiences of persons navigating gender identity and faith at Christian colleges or universities through semi-structured interviews of eleven gender minority students attending Christian colleges and universities. Results indicated positive and negative themes, with more negative than positive themes reported. Less often, responses reflected neutral or ambivalent themes, and within some domains, participants indicated a theme centered on lack of understanding or that gender identity and spiritual identity as separate. Themes emerged which indicated the high rate of negative statements regarding gender minority students experienced on campus, in addition to subthemes that reflect the protective factors associated with Christian values that supported gender diverse students and enhanced the learning environment.
