The aim of the study was to determine the antimicrobial effect of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi mother tincture (O), Calendula officinalis O and Echinacea purpurea O on Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) which is most commonly treated by several different antibiotics with undesired side effects. The resistance of S. aureus to antibiotics cause limitations, which creates the need to find gentler and safer alternative treatments for Staphylococcus infections. There have been limited in-vitro studies conducted on the effect of homoeopathic mother tinctures on S. aureus. This study was done by means of the Kirby-Bauer Disk agar diffusion method and the MIC test. This experiment determined the antimicrobial effect of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi O, Calendula officinalis O and Echinacea purpurea O on S. aureus in-vitro. Providing a gentler, safer and more effective alternative for the treatment of S. aureus infections and will open the field for further research. This study indicated that Arctostaphylos uva-ursi O, Calendula officinalis O and Echinacea purpurea O has an antibacterial effect on S. aureus. However, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi O was more effective against S. aureus than Calendula officinalis O and Echinacea purpurea O. Due to these results, 48 Staphylococcal strains from clinical settings were tested. Arctostaphylos uva-ursi O showed 100% growth inhibition on all the strains and species. Calendula officinalis had 33.3% inhibition on S. capatis and S. haemolyticus, 25% inhibition on S. cohnii cohnii, 13.3% inhibition on S. epidermidis, 50% on S. equorum, showed growth inhibition on S. hominis ssp novobiosepticus and 14.3% growth inhibition on S. warneri. Echinacea purpurea O had 25% growth inhibition on S. cohnii cohnii, 20% growth inhibition on S. epidermidis and 33.3% on S. haemolyticus. No further inhibition was noted for either Calendula officinalis O or Echinacea purpurea O.Even though Arctostaphylos uva-ursi O inhibited all the S. epidermidis strains the zone of inhibition varied widely, with a minimum inhibition of 9mm and a maximum inhibition of 39mm. Further studies can be done in order to understand why this is happening, and if it could possibly be bacterial resistance against the O. This could indicate that Staphylococcus forms resistance to mother tinctures and therefore can only be a temporary solution to Staphylococcal infections. On the other hand, it indicates that the tincture may not always work in the same way on all strains and more strains should be included in future studies to have a clear understanding of the effect of mother tinctures on the bacterium.
