This dissertation is chiefly about metaphysical questions raised by space and time, and how mathematical physics should inform our answers to those and other metaphysical questions. At centre-stage are questions about the modal properties of spacetime, and how doctrines about what spacetime points are, and what their essential properties are, interact with those modal questions. Topics that are discussed include: (i) theoretical equivalence, and whether purely mathematical facts about our best contemporary physical theories can constrain how we use those theories to guide metaphysical theorizing, (ii) the hole argument-which purports to show that General Relativity is indeterministic-how to respond to the argument in terms of essence, and whether this essentialist response is preferable to responding directly in modal terms, (iii) the tenability of the modal doctrine of anti-haecceitism, and whether vagueness can be used to defend a novel metaphysic of spacetime that implies this doctrine, (iv) the property of background independence, or "not positing a fixed spacetime background," and whether we should be more confident in physical theories that have this property than in those that don't, (v) whether essentialist claims can be used to explain and ground modal ones, and (vi) the tenability of qualitativist and structuralist metaphysical doctrines about spacetime. The dissertation as a whole also illustrates how we can make progress on foundational issues in the philosophy of physics by applying tools from metaphysics, and general limitations of a common methodology that instead focuses primarily on mathematical questions as a means of arriving at metaphysical conclusions about the non-mathematical world.
