Climate and water resources in Yunnan Province, China are controlled by the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM). The rainy season of the monsoon in this area is from June to September and rainfall during these months accounts for over 70% of all precipitation for the year. Qilu, a lake located in Yunnan Province, is a major source of fresh drinking water as well as a source of water for agricultural and industrial uses. Clean reliable sources of drinking water, like Qilu, are becoming increasingly important due to increasing populations This project describes the variation to the ISM over the middle to late Holocene as well as the relative degree of influences from humans. To determine when anthropogenic changes to the environment around Qilu began, radiometric dating was performed on terrestrial macrofossils to develop an age model and sedimentation rates. The results from this analysis indicate a maximum age of 6000 years BP for this study. Weight percentages of organic material and carbonate show three time zones of sedimentation from 6000 - 5000 years BP, 5000 - 1500 BP, and from 1500 - 300 BP. Also, δ18O and δ13C was measured for a sediment core from Qilu at every 2 cm to determine the relative strength of the ISM. These data show that the ISM from 6000 - 1500 years BP was gradually weakening, however around 1500 years BP the degree of human influence on the isotopic record becomes too great to track only the ISM. Future precipitation and ISM changes in Southeast Asia have direct implications to water availability for a growing population, additional work at lakes with different histories of human interaction is necessary to predict how the ISM may change in the future and to determine the full effects of human influences in the environment.
