Lake Qilu is a relatively large, shallow lake with an average depth of 4 m and a maximum depth of 7 m. Located in the east central Yunnan Province, this freshwater lake lies 1,797 m above sea level and has one man-made outflow but primarily loses water through evaporation. Previous work in this region of China indicates human manipulation of the hydrology of lakes occurred since the late Holocene through farming, mining, land clearing, and other practices related to human settlement. In 2015, a 6 m overlapping sediment record was collected from Qilu with the purpose of quantifying the magnitude, timing, and duration of anthropogenic impact on the lake in comparison to previous studies. Beginning at 800 years AD, sedimentology and stratigraphy indicate a gradual transition from brown/grey carbonate silt to red very fine-grained clay similar to catchment soils, strongly suggesting anthropogenic land use change and clearance. In order to understand the magnitude of preindustrial human activity on Lake Qilu and the surrounding watershed, this study will look at the isotopic composition of organic carbon, nitrogen, and carbon/nitrogen ratios, and use oxygen isotopes, inorganic carbon isotopes and phosphorous data as supplemental information to evaluate the extent of human induced nutrient loading at Lake Qilu and the resulting correlation to dynastic transitions in the Yunnan Province.
