The primary purpose of this research was to develop valid and reliable measures of motivation for solitude and relationship in the context of self-determination theory. Solitude and relationship were conceptualized as parallel and reciprocal ongoing needs and were objectively defined as time spent alone and with others, respectively. It was proposed that the degree of self-determination underlying the motivation for engaging in time spent alone or with others would distinguish that which was healthy and constructive from that which was not. Two measures were developed: The Motivation for Solitude Scale (MSS) and The Motivation for Relationship Scale (MRS). Each measure has two subscales: self-determined (the Self-Determined Solitude Subscale and the Self-Determined Relationship Subscale) and not self-determined (the Not Self-Determined Solitude Subscale and the Not Self-Determined Relationship Subscale). Three studies were conducted. Study 1 was a pilot study designed to gather preliminary psychometric information and to select items for the final versions of the scales. Study 2 included the following goals: (1) to examine the psychometric properties of the scales, including internal reliability, test-retest reliabilities, factor analytic structure, and the relationships among the scales; (2) to examine convergent/discriminant validity through associations with existing measures of related constructs; and (3) to examine associations with indicators of well-being. Study 3 was designed to examine the properties of the scales and their associations with indicators of social desirability and well-being in a sample of community adults. The results indicated that the MSS and the MRS are psychometrically sound, valid, and reliable measures of self-determined and not self-determined solitude and relationship. The associations with measures of other constructs and associations with indicators of well-being were consistently supportive of self-determination theory.
