This qualitative case study explores the benefits of conducting dance/movement therapy (DMT) in nature and compared nature-based DMT practices in indoor and outdoor settings. Connecting to nature through movement has strong foundations in Indigenous practices as a source of healing and expression. Although the modern fields of ecopsychology, ecotherapy, ecosomatics, and DMT also allude to nature's healing potential, published research analyzing the benefits of movement in nature or in institutional settings using nature-based prompts is rare. The researcher, a second-year DMT graduate student, designed six DMT sessions inspired by ecotherapy (Clinebell, 1996) and nature-based expressive arts therapy approaches (Atkins & Snyder, 2018) then conducted three sessions in the Pratt Institute dance studio and three sessions in the Pratt rose garden. Six participants-all second-year DMT students at Pratt-were interviewed privately, once after the indoor sessions and again after the outdoor sessions. After reading the transcripts and listening to the audio-recordings of the 12 interviews multiple times the researcher found emergent themes. The qualitative results showed beneficial therapeutic experiences within three main themes and six sub-themes: (1) nature as embodiment, with sub-themes exchange between body and nature and the body is nature, (2) nature as mirror, with sub-themes metaphoric expression and perspective/lens, and (3) nature as connection, with sub-themes memory and past and/or present. The study concludes that DMT combined with nature can serve as an entry point to embodiment, act as a mirror, and facilitate connection in both indoor and outdoor settings. These results provide new insight into the utilization of nature and DMT, demonstrating a beneficial connection between nature and DMT as a healing practice.
