This study contends that birth imagery constitutes an important rhetorical element in Isa 40-66 to affirm Yahweh's sovereignty over and care for Israel. The instances of birth imagery in this corpus contain resonances with ancient Near Eastern patterns. At the same time, Deutero- and Trito-Isaiah present the imagery in rather unique, creative, and even subversive ways, thus intensifying the effect of their rhetoric. Accordingly, birth imagery frequently appears in polemically oriented speeches, whereby Yahweh's power and care is shown to be far superior to that of other deities. In these rhetorical contexts, birth constitutes the descriptive realm in which the operation of divine power is demonstrated. The present work advances the discussion of birth imagery in the Hebrew Bible by directing attention to its rhetorical function in Isa 40-66 as expressing divine power. This study includes a systematic analysis of Isaianic passages that contain this imagery, thus facilitating more thoughtful consideration of its particular rhetorical value in individual oracles, as well as in the broader canonical context. This study also contends that the various appearances of birth imagery in Isa 40-66 disclose a coherent progression of birth events-from the initial groans in labor to the fulfillment of delivery. This trajectory, it is maintained, corresponds with the evolving experiences of the repatriate communities in Judah. Thus, in the overall frame of Isa 40-66, birth imagery represents an important descriptive item by which Deutero- and Trito-Isaiah assert Yahweh's faithful provision for his people.
