In an increasingly globalized world, teams become more and more culturally diverse. Mission teams on the field have also become more multicultural as more missionaries from non-Western countries join the work of reaching the nations with the gospel. Members of multicultural teams have varying cultural value differences-heterogeneity with respect to deep-level cultural dimensions a society shares that influence and regulate the way members of the society are most likely to think, feel, and behave. The purpose of this study was to better understand the relationship between the top team characteristics and cohesion in teams that are culturally diverse. The researcher reviewed current literature and utilized a systematic review to establish the top characteristics of healthy, effective teams-interdependence, mutual goals, collective results, mutual contribution, open input, clear goals, common norms, clear roles, healthy conflict, interpersonal trust, and mutual accountability. With these top eleven characteristics from the literature, the researcher utilized a quantitative survey to gather data from multicultural mission teams. The researcher used the top team characteristics as independent variables and Cohesion-a multidimensional construct that reflects team members' desire to be united as a group and to remain united in pursuit of the team's goals-as the dependent variable. After analyzing the results of the survey data, the researcher found all eleven team characteristics from the literature positively correlated to cohesion in multicultural mission teams. The analysis also revealed five characteristics that have a predictable effect on team-member perceptions of team cohesive-mutual contribution, interdependence, healthy conflict, clear roles, and common norms. The researcher provides explanations of the results and analysis and presents implications from the research to assist multicultural mission teams to be united. As teams strengthen mutual contribution, interdependence, healthy conflict, clear roles, and common norms, cohesion increases. The researcher also gives suggestions for implementation of the research results and implications. Analysis of the limitations, delimitations, and findings from the research offers opportunities for future research. This study can help culturally heterogeneous mission teams overcome negative effects of diversity to be effective, unified teams.
