This treatise presents Leos Janacek's Sonata for Violin and Piano and George Enescu's Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 3, Op. 25 "dans le caractere populaire Roumain" with a focus on indigenous elements and vocal influences, in order to guide a violin-piano duo's musical interpretation. Chapter One presents Janacek's speech-melody theory and connects it to his use of interruptive motifs and rhythmic irregularities in the sonata. It also describes the vital role and influence of the cimbalom in Moravian indigenous music as well as Janacek's replication of its textures throughout the piece. Chapter Two introduces musical elements of the Romani lautari style and examines Enescu's portrayal of "le caractere populaire Roumain" through the lenses of rhythmic complexity, elaborate violinistic ornamentation, and unique sound colors that imitate lautari instruments. This treatise serves as a guide to help performing musicians craft an informed, artistic interpretation of these two sonatas, and offers suggestions for practice, rehearsal, and performance.
