This dissertation links textual analyses of the Disney theme parks and films from Disney's film canon-including Song of the South, The Lion King, Pocahontas and Mulan-to an interdisciplinary body of work that has theorized issues of race and cultural difference. I argue that it is impossible to understand these Disney film texts in isolation, because film itself must be looked at in relation to broader cultural contexts. The Disney films circulate in an intertextual galaxy of other media in the Disney universe, in complex interrelationships that I refer to as Disney synergy. My critical focus goes beyond the problem of racially degrading stereotypes to consider the multiple ways in which racial and cultural meanings circulate within the Disney universe. I argue that underlying the seeming celebration of "multicultural" themes in recent Disney films and attractions, there is a fundamental and problematic reinforcement of racial difference. Chapter 1 begins with an examination of the history of Disney films to trace a general inventory of problematic racial stereotypes in the films. This general cinematic history is followed in Chapter 2, by a detailed textual analysis of the Disney animated feature, Pocahontas. This chapter focuses on contradictory readings of colonial history to demonstrate how historical interpretation, including the Disney film, is a contested site rather than an objective truth. Chapter 3 then turns to theories of audience reception and film spectatorship to overcome the conceptual limitations of "stereotype analysis" outlined in Chapter 1. It elaborates a more complex way of considering how an "ethnicized" spectator is constructed through a film text in relation to already circulating racial and cultural values. Chapter 4 further explores the Disney universe to illustrate how the theme parks reinforce the racialized themes introduced by Disney film characters and narratives, particularly through the "themed lands" of Frontierland and Adventureland. Chapter 5 examines the new theme park, Disney's Animal Kingdom, as an example of Disney synergy and to underline the fundamental role of racial difference in the myriad products in the Disney universe. I conclude by considering the implications of the child as a key consumer of these Disney cultural products within an increasingly cross-cultural global marketplace. In a global cultural context, an examination of the intersection of race and Disney products is an urgent one. Disney's inescapable domination of children's culture across multiple media combined with the company's global cultural expansion represents a trans-cultural power with profound influence. The contribution of this dissertation is its identification of the ways that race is represented and cross-referenced in the Disney universe and of how the production of racial difference is a fundamental structure that underlines these multiple entertainment products and leisure environments.
