Using Metaphor to Unpack Traumatic Material questions if a choreographer can process trauma somatically, translate this experience into choreography to the dancers, and present choreographic work for an audience to experience somatically or otherwise. Furthermore, can this be done without putting self, dancers, or audience at risk of re-traumatization? This paper includes research in the subjects of phenomenology, trigger warnings, post-traumatic stress disorder, somatics, and Laban Movement Analysis and Bartenieff Fundamentals. The corresponding choreographic project, Un-, created a personal narrative on stage supported by movement and design inspired by emotional content. Un- incorporated the research to create gesture, metaphor, symbolism, loose storytelling, and design to depict emotions connected to my experience with natural disaster, assault, and other traumas. Based on my own reflections and the reactions from my dancers and the audience, I believe that somatic self-healing, knowing, and organizing occurred in this process and in the final product.
