To most observers, Beethoven's Choral Fantasy is a straightforward theme and variations work for a solo pianist, chorus, and orchestra. It is often mentioned in proximity to Beethoven's greatest works through observations such as noting its premiere concert, or vague allusions to its being a predecessor to the Ninth Symphony Finale. But these observations do not adequately describe the work. The purpose of this thesis is: to describe the different musical qualities of the Choral Fantasy, most notably examining its form; to define major elements of the Ninth Symphony Finale that trace their lineage back to the Choral Fantasy; and to account for the structural curiosities presented in the work that have baffled observers since its premiere. Exploring these matters reveals that the Choral Fantasy is, in fact, more complex than a simple theme and variations, and is more than simply a predecessor to the Ninth Symphony Finale. The Choral Fantasy is an intriguing and worthy part of Beethoven's oeuvre.
