This dissertation explores the fluid and commonly multi-compositional aspects of Maya settlement patterns, which reflect concepts of space within Maya worldviews. Research will be focused on the predominantly Classic (ca. AD 650-810) era archaeological site of Cancuen and its neighbors in the Verapaz department of Guatemala. These settlements provide a complex arena where questions of identity, spirituality, and ethnic affiliations can be addressed within a spatial context. The continuing detailed settlement and environmental survey mapping within the Cancuen region is the primary source of evidence from which a more thorough appreciation of emic Maya spatial considerations will be investigated.The most enduring and unambiguous statement made by rulers, architects, engineers, and inhabitants is found in the planning of individual buildings (both of commoners and elites), and at a more complex level, entire archaeological sites. From the humblest residential structure to a multi-functioned elite courtyard, an entire city or confederation of states, buildings are physical manifestations of cultural attitudes, environmental adaptations and spiritual aesthetics that are sustained, maintained, and venerated for generations (Houston, 1998; McAnany, 1994, 2000).

520 $a Esta disertacion explora los aspectos fluidos y comunmente multicomposicionales de los patrones de asentamiento maya, que reflejan conceptos de espacio dentro de las cosmovisiones mayas. La investigacion se centrara en el sitio arqueologico predominantemente de la era Clasica (ca. 650-810 dC) de Cancuen y sus vecinos en el departamento de Verapaz en Guatemala. Estos asentamientos brindan un escenario complejo donde las cuestiones de identidad, espiritualidad y afiliaciones etnicas pueden abordarse dentro de un contexto espacial. El continuo mapeo detallado de los asentamientos y estudios ambientales dentro de la region de Cancuen es la principal fuente de evidencia a partir de la cual se investigara una apreciacion mas completa de las consideraciones espaciales de los mayas emicos.La declaracion mas perdurable e inequivoca hecha por gobernantes, arquitectos, ingenieros y habitantes se encuentra en la planificacion de edificios individuales (tanto de plebeyos como de elites) y, en un nivel mas complejo, de sitios arqueologicos completos. Desde la estructura residencial mas humilde hasta un patio de elite multifuncional, una ciudad entera o una confederacion de estados, los edificios son manifestaciones fisicas de actitudes culturales, adaptaciones ambientales y estetica espiritual que se sustentan, mantienen y veneran durante generaciones (Houston, 1998; McAnany, 1994, 2000).
