In the last few decades, scholars have employed ancient Mediterranean harbor remains and their assemblages to address questions pertaining to the economy and connectivity of the Roman Empire. Models evaluating patterns for ancient Mediterranean trade have for the most part focused on the remains of the largest harbors and ships and explored them while disregarding their economic hinterland and their broader historical and archaeological context. Above all, the role of simple anchorages and small boats during the Late Hellenistic and Early Roman period has been either neglected or downplayed to a mere subsidiary function, despite their apparent dominance. Only recently, scholars have begun to appreciate the potential of comparative regional case studies - looking at both large harbors and simple anchorages alike - for modeling more nuanced concepts pertaining to patterns of ancient Mediterranean trade. Yet, few such case studies exist, and no such analysis has ever been performed for the area of the Southern Coastal Levant.This research project draws on the Southern Coastal Levant (ca. 2nd century BCE to 1st/ 2 nd century CE) as a coastscape case study. The main aim is to analyze and define the main components of maritime-based connectivity in the area, and to locate the Southern Levant within the wider context of intense maritime connectivity in the Mediterranean basin as a whole during the Late Hellenistic and Early Roman periods. To achieve this goal, this research examines coastal logistics, networks of connectivity and patterns of consumption in the Southern Levantine coastal communities, as demonstrated through historical sources and the material culture. At the focus of the study stand large harbors and urban settlements, as well as natural anchorages and smaller coastal sites and communities in the hinterland.The results of the study suggest that during the period of the late 2nd century BCE to the 1 st/2nd century CE the coastal Southern Levant thrived commercially mostly thanks to the presence of natural, unimproved harbors. They also suggest that the marked sociopolitical changes taking place in the area, which included the establishment of new elites, were instrumental in contributing to the increased connectivity of the area with Mediterranean-wide networks.
