The poultry industry is faced with high worker turnover due to the physicality of tasks, e.g., floor egg collection and mortality removal. Robots could benefit the poultry producer by reducing this physicality. There has been research into the use of mobile robotic systems in the poultry industry to complete repetitive tasks e.g., picking up floor eggs, stimulating bird activity, monitoring house environmental conditions. There is also research on the removal of small mortalities (e.g., 3 kg chickens) but not on large turkeys that can reach ~23 kg. This research involved the development of a robot to collect mortalities inside a turkey house as well as an autonomous follow behind robot to transport materials and mortalities. The camera-equipped turkey carcass collecting (TCC) robot can be operated remotely with radio frequency signals. The TCC has an actuator-controlled fork to collect and transport mortalities out of the house. When tested in a commercial house, the TCC was moderately effective in collecting four >20 kg turkey carcasses. The autonomous follow behind carrier (FBC) uses ultra wideband sensors to follow a worker in the poultry house while an ultrasonic sensor is used to prevent accidents with birds. The FBC is equipped with a tilting container to unload carcasses and is designed to replace the wheelbarrow commonly used for carrying turkey mortalities. The FBC was successfully tested in the lab to follow a worker while carrying ~70 kg. Modifications to improve the TCC and FBC designs are suggested. Both these designs are novel applications of poultry robotics and in in the future, could also incorporate sensors and tools for monitoring environmental conditions and bird welfare.
