Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that increases likelihood of developing mental health issues such as depression or anxiety, which often is under-recognized and under-treated. Depressive symptoms in RA can lead to altered immune responses, motivational and compliance issues, decreased physical health and increased pain, and further complications such as heart disease and disability. Objective: The purpose was to look at adults between the ages of 18-65 years with RA and the effects that exercise had on functional status and depressive symptoms compared to usual care. Results: The 5 studies included a total of 293 participants with exercise durations for the intervention groups ranging from 6 weeks to 16 weeks. The results demonstrate that physical exercise does improve mental health based on the SF-36 mental health subscale (r=6.93), but not functional status, based on the Health Assessment Questionnaire (r=0.29) in patients with RA. Thus, the study failed to reject the null hypothesis. Conclusion: Interventions that incorporate mind-body components and group classes can be effective at improving mental health. Those that include individualized exercise programs can help improve functional status as they are effective at reducing risk of injury, associated pain, and increasing functional independence, ultimately leading to an increase in quality of life (QoL).
