Objective: To determine if breaking up prolonged periods of sedentary behavior in office workers with workplace interventions will improve cardiometabolic indicators (blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR)) and work productivity (Health Work Questionnaire (HWQ)). And to continue the investigation in sedentary workers on the feasibility of reducing sedentary behaviors to prevent adverse health risk. Methods: A randomized cross-over study of 2 intervention groups was conducted. The experimental group performed 30 minutes of standing at a standing desk, followed by 30 minutes of sitting, for 4 days of the work week. The control group performed 30 minutes of light self-paced walking at the end of the workday, for 4 days of the work week. Demographic data, BP, HR, total HWQ score, and HWQ productivity subscale score were collected. Analyses included demographic data displayed as means and standard errors, and a two- tailed paired t-test was used to display if any significance was found within and between the experimental and control groups. Results: The sample size consisted of 13 participants and was primarily female. The experimental and control groups demonstrated a non-significant improvement pre versus post systolic BP (p>0.05), however the mean change was larger in the experimental group. The experimental group demonstrated significant improvement (p<0.05) in total HWQ score indicating improved sense of work productivity when utilizing the standing desk. Conclusion: BP, HR, total HWQ score, and HWQ productivity subscale score all demonstrated no statistical significance within and between the experimental and control groups, apart from within the experimental group total HWQ score which demonstrated significant improvement. However, there is evidence supporting the implementation of the experimental protocol as there were non-significant improvements of mean scores/measures in all outcomes analyzed. Further research is needed to identify the most appropriate protocols in breaking up sedentary periods while at work for improving cardiometabolic health and work productivity in different population groups of sedentary office workers.
