By the time students reach college age, between 66% and 85% report that they have had at least one traumatic event occur during their lifetime, some of these respondents reporting multiple traumatic events (Frazier et al., 2009). There is strong evidence that trauma greatly impacts a student's ability to perform well in the classroom; a student's response to trauma can be quite evident in their coursework, social engagement, and response to stress. These students have trouble focusing and retaining information and may not attend class regularly (Firestein, 2019).Following a stressful or traumatic event, children and young adults continue to have mental and physical reactions to the stress as if it were ongoing. This constant state of tension can create lapses in concentration, attention-span, and information retention (MacKillop Family Services, n.d., para. 5). Mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other stress-related conditions have an impact on college students' grade point average (GPA) (Eisenberg et al., 2009) and ability to persist in college (Luca et al., 2016). The National Alliance on Mental Illness found students' mental health issues may also impact their continued enrollment in and graduation from college, as 64% of students who choose not to return to college do so for behavioral health-related reasons (NAMI, 2012, p. 8). However, with the appropriate support, individuals can recover from the harmful effects of trauma. Trauma-Informed Care can help children and young adults to reset their internal stress back to a normal baseline. This can be possible in any learning environment (MacKillop Family Services, n.d., para. 7).
