How do nonprofit newsrooms like 19th* and Texas Tribune perform journalism? Scholars have begun debating the impact of nonprofit newsrooms and this study explores it further by investigating journalistic doxa. The project evaluates how three nonprofit outlets - women-focused the 19th*, the Texas politics-focused Texas Tribune, and religious-focused Religion News Service - and three commercial outlets - The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Dallas Morning News - do journalism. It evaluates journalism doxa via coverage of Senate Bill 8 (SB8), Texas' abortion law which bans all abortion after 6 weeks and deputizes citizens to enforce it. Through a textual analysis of newsroom mission statements, hard news stories, and soft news stories published from August through October 2021, combined with descriptive statistics of reporter demographics, this study finds that nonprofit newsrooms act as supplements to commercial newsrooms. Further, two distinct elements of nonprofit news - their funding type and their specific reporting goals - might be indicative of specific types of coverage. For this reason, the local commercial newsroom the Dallas Morning News emerges as a middle-ground between nonprofit and commercial doxa.
