The Persian Gulf region was contested by a group of international and local powers, in the nineteenth century, the most prominent of which were Britain and the Ottoman Empire. The Persian Gulf was one of the important British routes to India, and the Ottoman Empire saw religious dimensions to the Arab Islamic world in the region, which imposed its protection of the island. The Arab region in which the holy places for Muslims are located in Mecca and Medina, along with the Arabian Gulf, represented a strategic dimension for the Ottoman Empire, in addition to its political and economic interests in the region. The British-Ottoman rivalry contributed to the creation of modern Qatar. The competition between the two powers contributed to the Al-Thani rulers exploiting these circumstances in their independence. However, this competition brought many problems to the nascent emirate, especially taking into account their intertwining relations. The geographical and social groups of the tribes and population groups that formed this emirate, such as of Na'aim and Qubaysat, resulted in the problem of [Zubarah] between Bahrain and Qatar, and [Khor Al-Udeid] between Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
