Passiflora species are valued for their aromatic tropical fruits, and beautiful flowers. Passion fruit production in southern Florida is worth $1-2 Million annually and is poised to expand but it is hindered by the lack of a formal germplasm trialing and improvement program. The Florida passion fruit industry is primarily composed of very few cultivars or grower propagated seedling selections. The level of genomic understanding for high-quality cultivars of passion fruit and Passiflora species is nascent. To promote a new cultivar for the industry, fruit quality and disease resistance are highly important. Passion fruit growers in south Florida currently face issues with vines dying prematurely from passion fruit canker, which is caused by a soilborne pathogen. Within this dissertation, the exploratory genomics of passion fruit and the pathosystem of passion fruit canker are examined. Passiflora species naturalized or native to Florida are sequenced in this study for the first time. Single nucleotide polymorphism patterns analyzed in this study can help classify and potentially promote certain passion fruit accessions as breeding parents. The abiotic plant stress of flooding is a possible susceptibility factor to passion fruit canker. Directions for future research to better understand the pathosystem of Fusarium solani for screening for resistance or tolerance to passion fruit canker are proposed.
