With more than 140 million Americans living in low-wage or impoverished conditions, the poor represent a significant portion of the nation's population. Yet, as a voting block or coalitional movement, the poor have never truly unified as a social class. This division amongst the poor is the result of socially engineered class positions that limit the impact the poor can have on the broader society. In 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. started formulating a strategy that could rectify this essential element of American life. Dr. King saw moral fusion organizing as a strategy that could be the key to racial and class solidarity aimed at ending oppression in the nation. Fifty years after King's death in 1968, The Poor People's Campaign have remerged in a time of endless war, consolidation of political power, and increases in austerity measures that continue to divide the population between haves and have nots. This dissertation aims to better understand how a poverty narrative is weaponized against the poor and how the PPC seeks to disrupt the narrative as a strategy for gaining a critical mass of public support to create a more just American society. Following the delineation of the poverty narrative, I will analyze various acts of resistance performed by the PPC. Through the analysis of those acts, I will identify the power structure being resisted. To conclude, I will argue that this investigatory tactic can be extremely useful for researchers oriented by critical rhetoric with the aim of demystifying an oppressive power structure as a critical praxis.
