Negative emotions play a key role in food choices and eating behaviors. Compared to other negative emotions such as anger and fear, disgust, which is closely related to eating behavior, has not been thoroughly studied so far. Based on the appraisal tendency theory, the present study examined how core disgust and moral disgust were associated with negative emotions and how appraisal patterns influenced how people process food commercials and make food choices. Core disgust was hypothesized to be associated with fear, and moral disgust was associated with anger. Because appraisal dimensions of fear differ from those of anger, experiencing core and moral disgust should lead to different appraisal and behavioral tendencies. Fear is associated with an avoidance tendency, and anger is associated with an approach tendency to control the source of the emotion. In Study 1, we tested the emotional associations between core disgust and moral disgust. Participants in Study 1 reported the emotions they experienced alongside equivalent core and moral disgust levels. The findings revealed that moral disgust was associated with both fear and anger, while core disgust was not strongly associated with fear. Then, based on the different mechanisms of core and moral disgust, Study 2 and Study 3 were used to test how the two types of disgust affected the way people processed food commercials (appraisal tendency) and made food choices (behavioral tendency). Study 2 used an unhealthy food commercial, and Study 3 used a healthy food commercial so the distinct effects of core and moral disgust could be validated to be broadly applicable. The findings supported that moral disgust led to healthier food choices than core disgust did when participants were exposed to the unhealthy food commercial. Study 3 showed that morally disgusted people focused on the appraisal of the healthy food commercial and limited their healthy food choices because their need to control their negative emotion after feeling moral disgust was met by watching the healthy food commercial.
