It has been well documented that women's rights are often co-opted for imperial purposes. The thesis defines this co-option-specifically the discussion of the expansion of Afghan women's rights as a moral justification for military intervention in Afghanistan-as "the Liberation Narrative." Critical feminist scholars including Leila Ahmed, Lila Abu-Lughod, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, and Sara Farris have provided various perspectives on the topic. The idea of the Liberation Narrative is not new. It is a useful tool for the benefit of colonialism and imperialism. The liberation narrative and co-option of women's rights was used by the French in order to assert dominance over Algeria and similarly by the British as a reason to occupy Egypt. Through a case study on media discourse regarding military intervention in Afghanistan, I more closely examine how the United States (U.S.) has utilized feminist values and norms such as women's rights for specific national security interests. The purpose of this thesis is to present a more complete understanding about how a gendered discourse was constructed to influence public opinion within the new security and political environment after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the U.S. (Shortened by ProQuest.).
