Konstantin Aleksandrovich Fedin (1892-1977) was a Soviet novelist and a literary functionary. He was viewed as a disputed figure in Soviet literature, and was heavily criticized by several of his contemporary colleagues, as well as by the majority of post-Soviet critics. He was subsequently relegated into the role of a 'conformist' writer and this resulted in his near-blacklisting from literature. The first aim of this thesis was to analyze Fedin's career and literary activity in order to determine if the criticisms levied against him had merit and that he indeed betrayed his colleagues in order to receive benefits from the Communist Party. The second aim was to use Fedin as a case study to examine the intricate relationship between the author and the totalitarian state. Fedin's longevity is one aspect of his uniqueness as a case study, as he successfully managed to navigate through several major cultural eras in the Soviet Union. Another unique aspect is Fedin's relative obscurity, as very few works were written about his place in literature. This thesis analyzed new, previously unpublished sources, and highlighted sources that were ignored or missed, alongside an analysis of Fedin's literary work in order to comprehensively understand Fedin's character and his adaptation to the reality of each Soviet cultural era. The thesis concluded that Fedin was a tragic figure, whom the regime successfully turned from a genuine novelist into an unenthusiastic and passive literary functionary. The post-Soviet critics had little merit to their accusations, and they had their own agendas for blacklisting Fedin from Russian literature. This project demonstrated the urgent need to reexamine and to reevaluate the 'conformist' side of Soviet writers, their legacy, their artistic merit and their contribution to Russian literature in a more comprehensive light. Perhaps if more of these writers were to be examined in such a fashion their rehabilitation and reaffirmation in Russian literature will be made possible.
