The main purpose of this study is to broaden the current knowledge base regarding the relationships between teens who sexually harass one another, and provide a more complete description of peer sexual harassment. The hypotheses state that there is a relationship between gender, context (age, maturity and peer relationship) and power and the criterion variable peer sexual harassment. Both perpetration and experience of sexual harassment are hypothesized to be related to gender, context, and power. The data for this study were gathered from a large, urban, midwestern high school and consisted of 342 students (120 males, 212 females). Teen peer sexual harassment was measured by a researcher constructed sexual harassment index consisting of twelve sexually harassing behaviors. Four behaviors were identified as physical sexual harassment and eight were identified as nonphysical sexual harassment. Power was measured by the Heterosexual Relationship scale (Hall, Howard & Boezio, 1986), and a subscale of the Index of Personal Reactions (Bennett, 1988). Perpetrator and victim reports of peer sexual harassment were analyzed separately. The hypotheses that gender will affect the frequency of experience and perpetration of peer sexual harassment were accepted. Males were identified as perpetrating more sexual harassment from both the victim and perpetrator standpoint. The hypotheses that power will affect the frequency of experience and perpetration of peer sexual harassment were also accepted for the nonphysical experience and perpetration of sexual harassment but not for the physical experience and perpetration of sexual harassment. Age did not appear to play any part in either the experience or the perpetration of sexual harassment. The hypotheses that maturity (based on grade point average) will affect the frequency of experience and perpetration of peer sexual harassment was accepted for nonphysical sexual harassment but not physical. The hypotheses that peer relationships will affect the frequency of experience and perpetration of peer sexual harassment were accepted for physical and nonphysical sexual harassment, and perpetration of physical sexual harassment but not nonphysical. Overall, there is a sense that although boys and girls experience similar rates of peer sexual harassment, there is still a gender difference in perpetration.
