With significant advances in treatment, children diagnosed with cancer are surviving an illness that was once considered to be tantamount to a death sentence. Given the improved survival rates, focus has begun to shift to helping youth cope with the psychosocial impact of cancer and its treatment. Children with cancer are at an increased risk for a variety of psychological symptoms (e.g., depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, poor body image) and adjustment difficulties (e.g., impaired social functioning, academic problems). Although some psychotherapy groups have been developed to provide emotional support to youth with cancer, they tend to be unstructured and to target adolescents. The current project involved developing a manualized group therapy intervention designed to address the salient psychosocial needs and improve the overall adjustment of pre-adolescents (ages 8-12 years) with cancer. The resulting manual was informed by a review of the literature on the psychosocial impact of cancer on youth, feedback from professionals with expertise in pediatric psycho-oncology, and the author's clinical experience conducting support groups for adolescents with cancer. The manual comprises an introduction to orient group facilitators to the program followed by 12 modules focused on addressing issues of relevance to preteens with cancer (e.g., psychoeducation regarding the illness and its treatment, stress management skills, improving self-esteem, expressing emotions, dealing with academic problems, coping with grief). Following a discussion of potential modifications to the current manual, plans for evaluating the efficacy of the treatment program and disseminating it to relevant professionals are described.
