No school can function independently or in isolation from the community it serves. There exists an inter-dependence between the community and the internal structures of the school. The rapid urbanization of the West Rand of Johannesburg has changed the demographics of the smaller communities. Subsequently, the schools in these areas experience a massive influx of learners which changes the educational needs of the communities. These needs are educationally focused and these needs bring pressure to bear upon the schools servicing these communities. The challenge each school faces is to be sensitive towards the changing in the expectations of its community in order to fulfil the role it is expected to play. A school plays an integral role in serving the community on a variety of levels. Other than being an educational facility, it is a hub of social and sporting events. It can also provide facilities for on-site medical and para-medical care. In order for a school to be the central sphere of activity of the community, there needs to be effective communication between the management of the school and its community. This study aims to evaluate the needs different communities have of their local schools and how these needs are being met. The community, as well as the demography of the school, are identified as the external determinants of the school's internal structures. As new private schools are opening their doors, they have to consider these external forces with the planning of the internal structures. The parental body is a powerful ally of the school management in staying abreast of these ever changing requirements. To the parents, it is essential that their children receive excellent education. Managerially speaking, the contribution of the parents is not only an eminent part of the improvement of the internal structures of the school, but it also provides a platform to the parents to voice their opinions and create an awareness of their importance to management. The management of the school has the responsibility to re-evaluate its policy documents annually, ensuring that it stays applicable to the whole spectrum of demands. An increase in the number of learners exerts added pressure on the school's financial system. The challenge, for every school, rests in the ability to prioritize the distribution of available funds. These challenges are magnified in South African private schools. Parents pay a large premium for their children's education. They expect an above average return on their investment. The rapid urbanization resulted in the erection of more private schools in the cities. This study endeavours to identify the private school's role in the community, in order to help promote the growth of, and increase the prosperity of the community it serves. The researcher opted for a qualitative research design because the study essentially aims to detect, ask questions, categorise, theorise, explain and explore (Huberman & Miles, 2002) the influence that the external factors of a school has on the implementation of the internal factors. Further qualitative research design guided the researcher in the process of collecting, interpreting and analysing data from openended questions gathered from structured interviews, completion of questionnaires and the study of the demography of each school. These methods helped the researcher to identify whether the community and the demography of a school are determinants of the internal factors of a school. Some of the findings were• The role of the Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) is three-fold. It plays a supportive role in terms of the need of the staff and learners, the PTA does fundraising so that all parties involved can benefit from the profit and they act as the voice of the parents to ensure effective communication between the parents and the teachers.• Growth in school infrastructure. The data has shown that sufficient educational facilities have become an important prerequisite when parents pay the school fees of an independent school. "School is public infrastructure and their location design and physical condition may well be one of the most important determinants of neighbourhood quality, regional growth and change in quality of life." McKoy (2008)• Growth in school demographics. Educational planning cannot be separated from considerations about dynamics of population. Mohanty (2011) and Steyn (et al., 2002) described demography as a significant determinant of the functioning of the educational system.• Communication in schools. If there is only one-way communication from the school to the community, one only has an informed community. With reciprocal communication one creates an empowered public that may have a positive influence on the educational system of the school. Effective communication in schools is vitally important to ensure that all parties are not only informed, but to create a sense of belonging in the school community and the conviction that their voice is being heard.• The School Community The parents confirmed that the school plays an integral part in building a strong community as "communities and schools are symbiotic". The school determines the social class of the community and the behaviour of its students. The community acts as a mirror for the morals, values and discipline cultivated in the school. In doing so, the school becomes the "beacon of excellence", an institution people can associate with. Cavaye (2011) identifies parents as pivotal to building an excellent community. The responsibility in building a distinguished community does not solely lie with the school, but to a certain extent, in identifying the role that the parents play in strengthening the interdependence between school and community. This lead to the following recommendations: • Placing a premium on the value of the PTA as a body and the role that it can play in the school.• The management of a school should never underestimate the value of an almost opulent appearance of the school. Continuous maintenance and improvement is paramount. The community scrutinizes the appearance of a school and is attracted to well-maintained buildings facilities. They become incensed to be part of, and associated with, that particular institution and its amenities. • For each school to ensure that it reflects all aspects of the community, the school management should attempt to identify the needs of its community, keep abreast of changes in these needs and how the needs could be addressed to satisfaction.• The teachers appreciate their input taken notice of often and efficiently. Each school should have a forum where they could voice their opinion and where they can feel that they are contributing to the prosperity of the school and its community.• Each school should strive to become a community school where the needs of the school are adequately satisfied. Involve the parents in as many activities as possible as they are pivotal in building a vibrant community.
