The present study examined relationships between personality factors and music preferences among adults. Participants (n=199) between the ages of 25 and 83-years-old completed a demographics questionnaire, the 44-item Big Five Inventory, and the Short Test of Music Preferences - Revised via Qualtrics. Correlation analyses were conducted to determine the relationships between personality factors and music preferences as well as other demographic variables. Reflective & Complex music was positively correlated with the Big Five trait of Openness and negatively correlated with Neuroticism. Intense & Rebellious music was positively correlated with Neuroticism and Openness and negatively correlated with Conscientiousness. Upbeat & Conventional music was positively correlated with Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness. Energetic & Rhythmic music was positively correlated with Openness. Significant differences between music preference among age groups was found for the Intense & Rebellious, Upbeat & Conventional, and Energetic & Rhythmic genres. A significant difference was also observed among racial groups in preference for Upbeat & Conventional and Energetic & Rhythmic music. In conclusion, this study provides a preliminary understanding of how adults' personality traits are related to different preferences for music types which may allow for an eventual deeper understanding of music preference as a whole and how these preferences may be utilized in therapy, research, and other areas of psychological practice.
