This study investigates the experiences and expectations of both supervisors and supervisees in addressing personal issues during supervision. Furthermore, this study identifies common themes, factors and conditions that influence the supervision process in relation to addressing personal issues in supervision. The literature suggests that the subject of addressing personal issues in supervision is a controversial one and that further clarification of the supervisor's role in exploring personal issues is needed. Faculty members, psychology interns and recent doctoral graduates from three Doctor of Psychology programs located in Chicago, IL were surveyed. Out of 218 subjects, 113 (52%) usable responses were obtained. A self-administered questionnaire, consisting of both multiple choice and open-ended questions, was specifically designed for this research project. Multiple choice questions were designed to explore the experiences and expectations of both supervisors and supervisees in addressing personal issues during supervision. The open-ended questions were designed to identify themes, factors and conditions that influence the supervision process specific to addressing personal issues. Results suggest that the experiences of both supervisors and supervisees in addressing personal issues during supervision are more similar than dissimilar, and that their expectations are predominantly in agreement. Results also indicate that supervisees experience the power differential that exists in the supervisory relationship, due to the evaluative role of the supervisor. As a result, the inherent imbalance in the supervisory relationship can potentially influence the supervisee's comfort level in addressing personal issues during supervision. Therefore, further clarification from the supervisor is needed regarding what the expectations are in addressing personal issues to increase the supervisee's comfort level.
