Thesis (Ph.D.)--Kent State University, 1996.
Includes bibliographical references
This research began in 1990 with a Master of Art's thesis, which served as a pilot study for the present endeavor. Thirty police officers participated in that initial investigation into the nature of the relationship between various measures of stress and personality characteristics. The relationships between perceived stress and the Gestalt resistances were found particularly important. Perceived stress was positively related to Projection, Deflection, Retroflection and Confluence, and was negatively related to Desensitization and Introjection (at p $<$.05 level of significance).

In 1996, this study continued the exploration of the relationships between stress (which included both perceived stress and the impact of events) and certain personality factors of police officers (which included the Gestalt contact and resistance styles, the Heroic Myth archetypes, and the emotional states). The specific purpose of the continuation of this study was to determine if stress had a causal effect upon the Gestalt contact and resistance styles, and to study the longitudinal relationships of stress and the Gestalt resistances. The sample consisted of 57 police officers from an urban department, and included 23 of the original group of 30. Path analyses, including the use of multiple regressions, analyses of correlations, and dependent t-tests were used in the statistical analyses of the cross sectional and longitudinal data. The analyses of correlations replicated the 1990 findings of the nature of the relationships between perceived stress and the Gestalt resistances, although these relationships appeared to be less strong in 1996 than in 1990. The path analyses of the Gestalt contact and resistance styles showed that 27% of Desensitization, 31% of Projection, 38% of Retroflection, 37% of Deflection, 31% of Egotism, and 19% of Introjection were explained by perceived stress. Myriad significant relationships were found between the Gestalt contact and resistance styles, the Heroic Myth archetypes, and the emotional states, and a significant and positive relationship was found between perceived stress and the impact of events. Unexpected results were obtained from the analyses of the longitudinal data. The reported amounts of the officers' perceived stress remained level between 1990 and 1996, yet the officers scored significantly higher in Introjection, and significantly lower in Projection and Deflection in 1996 than in 1990. (The level of stress was expected to increase between 1990 and 1996 because of the historical changes that had occurred.) These unexpected results were attributed to the inoculation effect of stress, and contributed to the discussion of the causal effect of stress.
