The Gestalt Contact Style Questionnaire Revised was modified by adding 40 original items to measure deflection. The new measure's factorial structure was then studied in a group of professional Gestalt therapists. One hundred and seventy-five therapists recruited through the major Gestalt Training Institutes in the U.S. completed and returned the questionnaires. In addition to the revised GCSQ-R, participants were asked to complete a Personal Data Form, the Interpersonal Check List and a Quick Reference Test. The responses of participants were evaluated using an exploratory factor analysis of the revised GCSQ-R, establishing correlations between the GCSQ-R and the ICL, and conducting an exploratory factor analysis of the new deflection items separately. Information provided by the Quick Reference Test regarding participant's knowledge of the theoretical concepts in Gestalt therapy was summarized. The main factor analysis uncovered a two-factor structure; one factor primarily resembling deflection, and a second factor resembling confluence. An exploratory analysis of the 40 newly constructed deflection items led to the development a new 22-item scale for measuring deflection. The new scale (CDEFLECT) has moderately high reliability and fewer items than the original GCSQ-R deflection scale. The CDEFLECT scale also contains a number of items with different content. Significant correlations were found between the ICL and the CDEFLECT scale in the predicted directions. Results indicate that the contact styles may be highly interdependent with the participants utilized in this study. Also, there seems to be some evidence for deflection being a contact style which has its basis in today's mechanized and busy society.
