This study examined the relationship between handwriting (legibility and speed) and visual and haptic perception. Thirty 9-year old Chinese school children were administered the Test of Visual Perception Skills (TVPS), the Manual Form Perception (MFP) test, and the Tseng Handwriting Problem Checklist (TKPC). Handwriting legibility scores correlated significantly with the TVPS but not the MFP. Handwriting speed was not significantly correlated with the TVPS and MFP. The study yielded unexpected findings that the TVPS visual memory subtest, and gender were associated significantly with legibility. Girls performed significantly better than boys. Stepwise regression revealed that visual memory contributed most significantly to legibility. Results suggest that assessing visual memory as a part of a handwriting evaluation might be appropriate, particularly with Chinese children. In addition, clinicians or researchers might consider the gender issue when they are confronted with problems in handwriting legibility.
