Thesis (M.A.)--Baylor University, 2005.
Includes bibliographical references
Because of the persistent and pervasive problem of misrepresentation of ethnic and minority groups within history, natural history and general museums, ethnic and cultural groups have established their own museums and cultural centers. These valuable institutions are places where the content comes from the voice of that ethnic or cultural croup and where these groups have a place to celebrate their identity. The ethnic and cultural museum "boom" began shortly after the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s when a renewal of ethnic identity demonstrated through the Race Pride Movement. The two case studies presented in this thesis focused on the two most historically prominent minority groups: Native Americans and African Americans. The case studies are compared to mainstream museums through the use of the mission statement, collections, exhibits and educational programming. Collaborative efforts and challenges faced are also examined.
