The Gempylidae, including an undescribed genus and species, is composed of 16 species in 15 genera. Osteological data are collected from all, and reported for the described genera for each of eight functional bone units: (1) neurocranium, (2) infraorbitals, (3) suspensorium and jaw apparatus, (4) hyoid apparatus, (5) opercular apparatus, (6) branchial apparatus, (7) pectoral girdle, and (8) caudal complex. Differences in 85 characters are evaluated as being either primitive or specialized by ontogenetic analysis or by comparison with an outgroup composed of the perciform genera: Pomatomus, Scombrops, and Scombrolabrax. Sources of error are discussed for character analysis utilizing monophyletic outgroups. It is determined that use of a non-monophyletic outgroup minimizes the probability of Type I errors. Shared specialized characters are used to construct a most parsimonicus cladogram. This cladogram resolves all 14 possible sistergroup relationships among the 15 genera. Thirty specialized characters are non-homoplastic and are hypothesized to have evolved only once within the Gempylidae. The gempylids are divided into six monophyletic groups. The Lepidocybium, Ruvettus, and Thyrsites groups are monotypic. The Epinnula group is composed of Epinnula, Neoepinnula, Thyrsitops, and the undescribed genus. The Nealotus group is composed of Nealotus, Promethichthys, and Rexea. The Gempylus group is composed of Gempylus, Thyrsitoides, Nesiarchus, Diplospinus, and Paradiplospinus.
