Thesis (D.P.A.)--Nova Southeastern University, 2008.
Includes bibliographical references
This research sought to strengthen current LMX research by examining the dual relationship of demographic dissimilarity and communication practices on the quality of the leader-member in an effort to gain insight on how to build high-quality supervisor-employee relationships. For this study, the sample population consisted of 400 employees of a large metropolitan government organization located in the southeastern region of the United States. Data was collected solely from the employee's perspective based upon prior LMX research, which postulates that members who are fortunate to perceive they have an in-group exchange with their leader also assume greater involvement, increased productivity, and receive greater positional resources from their leader than do members who perceive they have an out-group exchange with their leader. The findings showed that communication practice satisfaction strongly predicts LMX quality, regardless of demographic dissimilarity.
