Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) are being studied as fillers for thermally conductive polymer composites due to their high anisotropic thermal conductivity. However, the thermal conductivity of the produced BNNT-thermally conductive polymer does not match the theoretical prediction. This has been linked to random BNNT orientation and poor BNNT dispersion in polymer. We investigate the use of a sonochemical process to covalently functionalize BNNT with fluorine moieties to improve dispersion in fluorinated fluids and polymers, and thus thermal conductivity. We also investigate the surface modification of BNNT with iron oxide nanoparticles for possible alignment using magnetic field. The effects of varying BNNT concentrations on thermal conductivity in an ethylene and propylene water mixture were also investigated. Finally, the literature on the structure, properties, synthesis, and application of BNNTs was reviewed, with an emphasis on purification.
