Swallowing and language have been studied extensively as neurologically separate processes; however, emerging evidence in both adult neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease and pediatric neurodevelopmental disordered populations have suggested that these functions may share common neurologic bases. To explore this possible link further, this study investigated swallowing and language deficits in individuals diagnosed with a rare genetic disease, Niemann-Pick Type C (NPC). Patients with NPC were chosen because NPC is considered to be both a neurodegenerative and a neurodevelopmental disease. Additionally, both swallowing and language deficits result from NPC, but research in both is extremely limited. The primary aims of this study were to provide a more comprehensive swallowing and language profile of individuals with NPC, and to determine if any components of swallowing and language were significantly correlated suggesting common neurologic substrates. For this study, a secondary analysis was performed on fifteen participants with NPC currently participating in a larger drug trial. Baseline swallowing and language data as well as clinical severity ratings were collected and analyzed through descriptive and nonparametric statistics. Results identified both oral and pharyngeal phase swallow deficits, and receptive and expressive language deficits across all participants, regardless of NPC severity. Moreover, patterns of these results suggest that NPC disease progression contains similarities and differences to Alzheimer's disease. Ultimately, this study expanded upon current knowledge related to swallowing and language impairments in individuals with NPC and provided several avenues for future research.
