Aeolian-Fluvial (A-F) processes are common along dunefield margins, where masses of encroaching sand encounter fluvial systems. The thesis considers the bilateral impacts of aeolian and fluvial systems, ranging from fully aeolian to fully fluvial dominated processes in the northwestern (NW) Negev dunefield margins. It (1) analyzes the dynamics, extent, and chronology of late Quaternary A-F processes and their role in landscape evolution along the dunefield margins; (2) examines the fluvial response to an aeolian-dominated environment marked by dune damming and waterbody impoundments, (3) interprets palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic drivers on A-F processes. The NW Negev desert dunefield (1,300 km2) is bounded by the anticlines of lower Cretaceous hard carbonate strata in the Negev highlands to the south, Eocene chalk hills to the east, and the Mediterranean coastal plain to the north. The dunefield is located at the eastern end of the SinaiNegev erg that extends from the Nile Delta. It consists mainly of Vegetated Linear Dunes (VLDs), which encroached in three incursion corridors into the NW Negev, crossing and damming ephemeral fluvial systems originating in the Negev highlands.Geomorphological and geoarchaeological studies of A-F processes throughout the NW Negev dunefield, provided dating of prehistoric sites and sediments affiliated with the fluvial response to dune encroachments to 32-22 ka and 13.8-12.3 ka. These studies did not, however, identify the remains of dunes that dammed these systems. A later study documented dune damming and suggested a link between dune-damming impoundments and upstream drainage basin properties. Extensive Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating of the dunefield revealed episodic dune mobilization periods between 23-11 ka, but with no correlation between the dated dunes and the fluvial sediments of dune dam impoundments. These finds offered a sound chronological framework for this study. The Negev dunefield and particularly its margins were found to be a prime setting for studying A-F processes with reference to following theoretical gaps: (1) definition of the NW Negev dunefield margins; (2) characterization of sedimentary units deposited in A-F environments; (3) connections between periods of VLD elongation and stabilization and dune-dammed water body impoundments; (4) responses of the fluvial system to dune-damming; (5) distinguishment between palaeoenvironmental condition of the basin properties and palaeoclimatic forcing factors and conditions on A-F processes, and (6) impacts of A-F processes upon landscape evolution. The research stages were: (1) identification of A-F deposits based on Orthophotos (~1 m per pixel) with surveys of basins of < 1 km2 to 604 km2 (Nahal Besor); (2) geomorphic mapping; (3) stratigraphic analysis of sixteen A-F sections along the Wadi banks of two medium-sized basins: Wadis Ruth (100 km2) and Atadim (64 km2) situated at the margins of the southern and central incursion corridors, respectively; (4) sedimentological analysis of grain size distribution, inorganic and organic carbon, and calcium carbonate content; (5) relative age analysis using a Portable Optically Stimulated Luminescence (POSL) device enabling stratigraphic insights where no clear distinction between sedimentary units is observed and for choosing optimal samples for OSL dating; (6) absolute chronological determination by OSL, radiocarbon, and archeological dating.
