In this dissertation, I argue that amidst a rapidly collapsing planetary climate system, that our environmental politics fails to recognize the vitality of non-human nature and our inalienable connections to it - thus rendering technocratic solutions to the crisis woefully insufficient. To that end, I assert that an ideological shift is required to cultivate a new collective political imagination that recognizes the necessity of a flourishing web of life that unsettles assumptions of human exceptionalism. Through an integration of environmental political theory with the developing literature of new materialism, I draw on theoretical applications of the sublime encounter - an overwhelming sensorial experience that can alter the perceptions of the viewing subject. I identify sublime experiences that we are able uniquely apprehend in an era of ecological crisis: rapidly deteriorating ecosystems, the material composition of our embodied, permeable selves, the spiritual elevation found in the vibrancy and vastness of the Cosmos, and finally in collective political action - and the challenges that such experiences present to anthropocentric framings of humanity and non-human nature. The goal of this project is to illustrate two institutional barriers that limit our ability to grapple with the scale of the climate crisis: the historical separation of the human from (and above) nature in political theory, and a reluctance to abandon anthropocentric political ideals that identify humanity as elevated above and uniquely positioned to occupy a permanent position among the rest of Earthly nature.
