In Myths To Live By (1972), Joseph Campbell remarks that civilizations depend on symbolic forms to support their cohesion, vitality, and creative powers. The "life-supporting illusions" Campbell identifies offer a chance to make meaning out of our sense of self (p. 10). In my clinical research, I became fascinated by the relationship between narrative art therapy, imaginative literature, and the development of self-awareness. The umbrella of imaginative literature includes folklore, mythology, fairy tales, and poetry. These vessels of enchantment give us the opportunity to investigate thematic patterns and persisting archetypes to provide a deeper sense of one's orientation in the world. In this study, I endeavored to explore how these narratives reveal information about ourselves that I've discovered were possible throughout my internship experiences and in my own art practice. I believe the quests and characters we invent are informed by a storyteller who is always unconsciously at play in our most private inner work.
