This dissertation expands possibilities for arts-based and educational research by drawing from and adding substantively to critical race theory and critical race research methodologies including critical race hermeneutics and counter storytelling, and of course, application of Cheryl Harris's (1993) Whiteness as Property. Through close to a decade as public school teachers, and 15 years of painting over 130,000 square feet of public street murals around the U.S., we have developed and facilitated a practice of what we call vandalizing whiteness. We have studied this practice, and here exemplify-in the course of interpretation-such vandalizations as research methodologies; making this pedagogical. As directed at and importantly beyond whiteness, and as specifically situated in the neoliberal social media-ignited machine of cool called street art, vandalizations of whiteness situate within broader practices/theories of ante-coolness. Ante-coolness can be known, in part, as epistemological frameworks undergirding art and educational theories/practices, pedagogies, and research methodologies, of vandalizing whiteness; that is ante-coolness is not only, but at present necessarily, anti- and ante- whiteness. Anti- draws from, critiques, and advances anti-racism for social justice, and ante- follows Fred Moten's (2015) use of ante-normative in describing blackness and its relationality to whiteness, which built on Nahum Chandler's (2000) assertion that whiteness is but, to use an artistic term, the tracing of blackness.
