Familiarity with various scientific topics, especially when they are areas of environmental concern, is important for improving science literacy and an audience's willingness to learn, foster community involvement, and finally influence changes for the better of environmental health, safety and wellbeing. Through the research and analysis of eight public lands in the State of New Jersey, a better understanding of an array of themes that makes each site unique has been established. Branching as far south as Cape May County, and as north as Somerset County, a variety of land uses, ecologies, histories, recreational uses, and political influences have been explored and documented. These experiences offer insight on the areas in which a better community-oriented connection can be established to help establish a sense of landscape awareness and inform visitors on the uniqueness of three specific sites as they relate to defined thematic concepts. Concept plans have been created to better inform visitors of key aspects of each site aiding in the familiarity of the landscape, a better relationship with scientific literacy, and an overall redefined personal and emotional relationship with public lands.Responsibility of public land use relates directly to the governing body. This analysis compares various ways landscapes are experienced and offers suggestions of areas where improvements can be made on sites related to Rutgers University. Increased university involvement with these public lands can provide for a more integrated relationship betweenpeople and landscape.
