Parenting is often regarded as one of the most rewarding experiences in a person's life. Nonetheless, there are challenges that come with parenting. The natural desire is to parent in the best way possible, but there are times when a parent may react in ways that are unknown even to themselves. When we become parents, we often bring with us beliefs, feelings and patterns from our own past that influence the way we parent our children (Fraiberg, 1980; Siegel & Hartzell, 2013). Research discussed in this dissertation will focus on what effects negative parenting may have and how learning to parent reflectively can have a positive outcome on parent and child and lead to a greater likelihood of a more positive parent-child relationship. Undergirding this abilityis a process known as parental reflective functioning (PRF), which involves "mentalization," a way of imagining how you and another are thinking and feeling, especially your child. Through this phenomenological study, three themes emerged that are seen as useful guides for professional development and intervention for those who work with Latinx immigrant parents. These themes are examined and discussed. Slade (2005) noted that in times of love or hate, peace or war, or simply in times of everyday living, human beings try to understand their own and others' minds. This is a key component to parenting as well as an essential way to cultivate reflectivity in children themselves, and an ingredient to help them become secure adults.
