In this work, I focus on the development of the literary tradition in Saudi Arabia, particularly the short story as written by female Saudi writers/authoresses; a task that sheds light on the rawness of this literary tradition. This discussion includes an analysis of the three primary generations of short story authoress-ing in Saudi Arabia, including all the unique characteristics, markers, and developmental factors (internal and external influences) involved in their creation and development. Additionally, these three generations, or chronological time periods, are represented through an anthology of short stories by Saudi authoresses to better represent the developmental patterns of women's literary writing in Saudi Arabia. The short stories in the anthology were carefully selected and translated from Arabic to English using the preservatory, foreignizing translation method of thick translation. This method of translation allows for the texts and the translations of the texts to function in a theorized academic situation for an English-speaking audience, as a way of preserving the source culture (including, cultural concepts, and culturally specific items in the texts), representing the cultural and literary significance of the texts, and exposing the source culture to a foreign audience.
