Traditional forms of music analysis have focused on elements of pitch, rhythm, timbre, and dynamics-those elements historically integral to compositional process in the Western classical tradition. However, performers' energy, stage presence, and the way they interact (or don't interact) with each other and/or the audience are also important qualities of musical performance, as is the specific quality and focus of their attention and how it shifts over the course of the piece. For many works which are indeterminate with regards to their performance, states of attention and performer interaction are important compositional parameters that define the identity of these works. While the few analyses of works which are indeterminate with regards to their performance mention the importance of these parameters, most continue to analyze these works with regards to the traditional parameters of pitch, rhythm, timbre, and dynamics. This paper will examine how states of attention and performer interaction shape the composition of three works (David Dunn's Purposeful Listening in Complex States of Time, George Lewis's Artificial Life, and Christian Wolff's Lines), developing unique approaches to analysis relevant to each piece.
