The present dissertation is an effort to introduce Monk Yaodi Roasts Zhuangzi into contemporary Anglophone discourse on the Zhuangzi. The guiding theme of the present dissertation is human flourishing, with a particular focus on meaning and wellbeing. The dissertation is built around two case studies: the Peng Bird passage from "Xiaoyaoyou" ("Free and Easy Wandering"-ch. 1) and the Heavenly Piping passage from "Qiwulun" ("Discussion on Making All Things Equal"-ch. 2). These represent two of the major episodes of the text, both from the viewpoint of the history of Zhuangzi studies generally, and from Fang Yizhi's viewpoint in particular. The case studies are preceded by an introductory chapter which establishes the background context, while the case studies are followed by a chapter specifically focused on what the case studies have to tell present-day persons about meaning and wellbeing.
