This study aimed to clarify understanding of attachment representation during late adolescence and early adulthood. First, establishment of construct validity for two measures of attachment representations---one based on parent-child relationship (AAI assessed), the other on romantic relationship (CRI assessed)---was achieved through use of observations of organization of secure base behaviors and interviewer-coded self-reports of friendships, romantic relationships, and general social support. Differential predictors of each representation were hypothesized, with parent-child representation predicting friendships and general social support, and romantic relationship representation predicting most strongly to self-reported romantic relationship factors. Romantic relationship behavioral observation was hypothesized to be predicted by both representations. Second, competing models of the relation between representations were assessed to clarify assertions of the supremacy of one representation during late adolescence and early adulthood. It was hypothesized that a hierarchical relation would be found, with AAI predicting CRI representation, in turn predicting romantic relationship measures. Results supported the association between measures of romantic relationships and CRI representations, whereas neither the AAI nor CRI representations were significant in explaining friendship or general social support networks. While one mediation model of CRI being predicted by AAI was suggested, additional support for a hierarchical or horizontal relation between attachment relationships is necessary. Findings suggest that during late adolescence and early adulthood, romantic relationship representations have significant explanatory power in describing romantic relationship behaviors, while attachment representations based on early parent-child relationships no longer reign supreme in explaining social relationships, at least in the small sample of this study. Implications for future research and theory are discussed.
